Razzum Frazzum.......

Noah's new saying when he does not get his way or is told "no" is "razzum frazzum stinky stink" mumbled under his breath. Guess that's better than the language I hear from some kids at school.

Other than the "swearing", I am in love with 5 year old Noah. Of all the ages and stages of his little life, I'm loving the one the most. He is so sweet, and loving, and caring. He will come and give me a hug and say "I love you Mom" for no reason at all. When I get home from work, he says "hi Mom, how was your day?" He seems so grown up all of a sudden and wants to be independent with so many things, yet he is still so innocent and trusting and thinks that mommy and daddy are super heroes. Don't get me wrong, he definitely has his moments of imperfection, but all in all, he's been a really fun, sweet person to be around lately.

And then there's my sweet baby girl Ella, who's entering her terrible twos way too early. She can be sweet and loving, too. But she is also interested in exerting her independence, although not in as nice a way as Noah. Her Grandma Jolene thinks she is hysterical, and says that I would, too, if I wasn't her mom. Secretly, I do think she's hysterical at times, but I know I can't let her know that I think she's funny, because I don't want to reinforce her anti-social, screaming, shrieking, sassiness. She's definitely found her voice, and all my worrying about her speech and language was for naught because she's just fine, and, of course, as I predicted, I'm now mourning the relative silence that we had when she was not talking so much.

In other exciting news, Noah scored his first goal at his soccer game on Saturday. I didn't get to see it because I had stayed home with Ella because of the yucky weather. He was so excited to tell me, and I was so sad that I missed it that I got a little teary-eyed and he said "it's okay, mommy, I'll score lots more so you can see". I hope so!

Singer/ Songwriter Extraodinaire

Noah performed this song that he "wrote" for Seth and I tonight. It is titled "Where is My Billfold?" (keep it in mind- it may be on the Billboard list someday and you can say you knew him when)

Where is my billfold? I don't know.
Where is my billfold? Where did it go?
I looked under my nose, I looked under my toes.
I looked under my nose, I looked under my toes.
Barney Rubble doesn't know where it is.
Fred Flinstone doesn't know where it is.
Pebbles and Bam Bam don't know where it is.
Where did it go? I DON'T KNOW!!!

Is that a classic in the making or what?

Stranger Danger!!!

When I was little I was horribly, exruciatingly shy. My parents tell me that I did not speak in preschool until December. I didn't like being so shy- I hated it, actually- and I didn't want to be shy, but I couldn't NOT be shy. As I got into high school, my shyness was interpreted as aloofness and people thought I was stuck-up and snobby. I've grown out of it by now, but I still remember the feeling of wanting to be able to talk to people and join in things without feeling terrified, but just not being able to.

For five years now, I've marvelled at how opposite of shy Noah is. He does not have a shy bone in his body. He will talk (and talk and talk) to anyone who will listen. He loves to order for himself at restaurants and chat up the cashiers at stores and loves parties because he has a whole room full of people to interact with. I love that he is confident and not shy since I know what the alternative feels like.

There's a downside, however. I read in the paper a few days ago about an alleged attempted abduction where a man was asking kids if they had seen his dog (I later found out that he really did lose his dog- and apparently a few marbles- WHAT was he thinking???). Anyway, I had a bad dream last night about it and Noah, so when I woke up this morning I was thinking about it, and how Noah would probably help anybody who asked him and not be at all afraid.

Even though we have talked a lot about strangers and how he shouldn't talk to people he doesn't know unless mommy or daddy are with him, I decided to give him a little "test". While he was eating breakfast I asked him what he would do if he was outside playing in the yard and someone drove up and asked if he'd seen their puppy. He said "I'd say I hadn't seen it". I asked what he would do if they rolled down their window and asked him to come see a picture so he could see what the dog looked like. He replied "I'd go look at it so I could see if I had seen it and try and help". My heart sank. I proceeded to tell him that what he should do is scream "MOM" as loud as he can and RUN to find me and if the person really lost their dog, mommy would help. But would he really do that? He nodded solemnly and promised he would.

It's terrifying to me to think of all the what ifs and all the bad things that can happen. It's also hard because while I want Noah to continue to be confident and outgoing and friendly, I also want him to be safe. I wish I didn't have to teach him about strangers and bad things that strangers can do. I wish that I could always know that he will be safe no matter what and that no harm will come to him. Unfortunately, that's not the world we live in. I will keep talking to him about what to do and who he can and cannot talk to and hope and pray that he remembers what he needs to when he needs to remember it, but that that time never comes and he is safe and sound always. Isn't that every parent's wish?

Just Checking

Happy Easter 2009 from the Christensen family!

This morning (at the crack of dawn) Noah went downstairs to see what the Eater Bunny had brought. He found his and Ella's loot, and he also found a couple baskets that we had put togther for our neice and nephew and had sitting on the counter. He asked Seth who they were for, and Seth told him. Then he asked how come the Easter Bunny brought their baskets to our house, and Seth explained that they were from Seth and I. Noah asked if his Easter basket was really from Seth and I, too. Seth said, no, those are from the Easter Bunny, to which Noah replied "that's what I thought, I was just checking." Whew.

The kids were funny this morning racing around the house to find Easter eggs. They had practice yesterday at an egg hunt at our church, and then had another hunt with their cousin's at Grandma and Grandpa's. Ella had fun just running around finding an egg or two, and Noah was all seriousness in his hunt for as many eggs as he could find.

Overall, it was a fun Easter. It would have been more fun if we could have slept in just a few more minutes!! Seth and I were both tired crabs, but we tried to hold it together for the kids' sake, and I think we were successful. I ate WAY too much candy today, however, and I think we have about 7 lbs of candy when all is said and done that we definitely do not need. Oh well, it wouldn't be a holiday if I didn't feel sick with chocolate and fatigue, right??

Easter is Coming!

Noah is hamming it up for the camera.

Ella was not too happy with Mommy at this point.

I made a bunny cake for the kids to take to the babysitter's.

Little Liar

Only one more week of tax season!! Woo Hoo!! I will be able to go to the gym again without having to drag the kids along with me, and Ella will (hopefully) start to remember who Seth is and let him do things- anything- with her without screaming "Mommmeeeeeee!!!"

Seth and I had a proud parent moment when we went to Noah's parent-teacher conference this week. His teacher said that she can always count on him to listen, follow directions, and follow the rules, and that he is a good role model in that respect so she will make sure to praise what he is doing so the other kids will follow his lead. It's nice to know he has the capability of listening, even if he chooses not to at home all the time :)

Ella surprised me the other night as I was putting her to bed. She pulled out her pacifier and said "Mommy, Ha-ah hit at Issa's house" (translated: Hannah hit at Lisa's house") I quickly counted on my fingers- oh my gosh, she just said her first more than three word sentence!! I said "Hannah hit you?", she said "no, Ha-ah hit Nah nah (Noah)" and proceeded to demonstrate for me how Hannah allegedly hit Nah nah in the mouth. I said "Hannah hit Noah? Oh dear, what did you say?" and she replied "no hit Ha-ah" with much forcefulness. Later I asked Noah if Hannah hit him at Lisa's and he said no, and acted like he had no idea what I was talking about. Ella's first multi-word account was a total lie!!

Ella's other new fun activity is to take off all her clothes and her diaper when she's in her bed. Last night she woke up crying and Seth went in to take care of her and said that she was lying, bum-naked, hunched up in her bed in a puddle of urine. Nice. When her got her up she kept saying "code" because she was cold. Well, keep your clothes on and you wouldn't have that problem, stinker!!
Oh, fun times at the Christensen house.

Noah has started his spring season of soccer. He has improved slightly from the fall, but he's still no David Beckham, that's for sure. Oh well, he enjoys it because he gets a snack when it's over. As long as he has fun, right?
